TMA Travel Teams spend one week in the Dominican Republic working with Dominican Mentors to provide professional learning to Dominican teachers. The week consists of planning with Dominican Mentors and four days of co-presenting workshops to groups of 40-50 local teachers at one site. Bilingual interpreters support the Canadian teachers to communicate with our Dominican educators. Local excursions allow participants to get to know more about the people, culture, flora and fauna of this beautiful island.
Teams travel in July or August. Volunteers self-fund their travel and receive a charitable donation tax receipt for the cost. Flights, ground transportation, accommodations and meals are all included.
Canadian Team Members commit to pre-travel orientation and planning meetings in the spring prior to travel. Some of the orientation training is asynchronous. Synchronous planning for a couple of Saturdays facilitates the preparation of workshop content.
One post-travel meeting is required, at which team members reflect on their experiences and provide feedback to TMA.
